The art of looking expensive

Style upgrades that cost less than you think

In partnership with

Champagne taste, coffee budget

You don’t need a designer budget to look like you own the room.

The best-dressed guys aren’t dripping in labels - they just use details, fit, and confidence to make a $50 outfit feel like $500.

How clothes drape, how colors work together, how details quietly signal quality - these are the things you should be focused on.

When first impressions matter, how you look - not the brand name - is going to speak before you do.

Today I’ll show you how to make your style say “premium” without your bank account crying for mercy.

SMART STYLE
SMARTER BUDGET

Looking your best doesn’t necessarily mean having to spend the most.

There’s only so many days in the week, so there’s only so many fits you really need before clothes start getting lost in the closet, never to be worn again.

Parts of your wardrobe are untouched because you liked <insert that expensive shirt here> but it just didn’t fit right - let’s change this.

Become strategic with your fitting

Nothing screams “cheap” like bad tailoring.

Spend the extra $20-$40 on alterations.

It’s the single most cost-effective way to make any piece look custom.
A perfectly tailored $60 blazer will outshine an $800 one that hangs wrong.

Do this for pieces you plan on wearing for years - no better investment in your wardrobe than clothing that fits properly.

Neutral palettes do all the work

Black, navy, camel, and crisp white naturally read as expensive.

Avoid overly loud colors and prints unless it’s a subtle accent.
Minimal palettes make mixing, matching, and layering effortless and timeless.

It also makes getting dressed easier when most of your pieces are not only going to look good, they’re also going to match.

Elevate through accessories

Keep them simple and high-quality.

These small touches quietly signal sophistication, regardless of their price point:

  • A clean leather belt

  • Minimalist watch

  • Sharp pair of sunglasses

Hack: Shop like a stylist

If you know where to look, you can get sharp, luxury-level pieces without paying luxury-level prices.

Stylists swear by these three sources:

☑️ Outlet Stores

The selection might not be current season and sizes can be hit-or-miss, but that’s not the point. The goal is to find a few timeless, high-quality pieces that anchor your wardrobe.

Think blazers, button-downs, and other core staples.

Try Saks Off Fifth, Nordstrom Rack, and Neiman Marcus Last Call for serious deals.

☑️ Off-Season Sales

Buy coats in January or February when stores are desperate to clear space for spring. By the same logic, grab swimsuits in July or August as the season winds down.

Timing your purchases can cut prices in half (or more).

☑️ Sample Sales

A little harder to track down, but worth it. With a quick Google or Reddit search, you can find the brands and conversations sharing when these happen - many are now online, making them easier to shop from anywhere.
